DBT

DBT
– is a form of psychotherapy originally developed to address what are considered to be the deficits in CBT.  Some people may experience sudden surges of emotion such as heightened anxiety which could cause them to adopt a damaging behaviour.  The aim of DBT is to balance ‘validation’ with ‘problem solving’.  The balance between the two enables changes to occur in problematic patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving.

My role as the therapist is to explore with you an acceptance that your problem behaviour may have been the only way you had learnt to cope with sudden intense surges of emotion.  In the short term, this behaviour might have led to positive benefits, e.g. a sense of calmness, but in the long term, it was very damaging.  You will learn new techniques and coping skills to promote self-management.  At the same time a reliance on a ‘wise mind’ is promoted and developed moving you towards the ultimate goal in DBT, which is to create ‘a life worth living’.  Mindfulness skills are at the core of the treatment.
